Safe-R Insulation Auckland – Underfloor Insulation Advice

Safe-R Insulation Auckland – Underfloor Insulation Advice

Safe-R Insulation Auckland can help you choose the right type of underfloor insulation. There are two significant types of floor insulation – foil with an adjacent air cavity and bulk insulation such as blanket or polystyrene insulation.

The underfloor insulation must cover all accessible parts of the floor below the habitable spaces of a dwelling, except where clearances are required – e.g. for pipework – refer to the New Zealand insulation installation standard NZS 4246 for guidance on required clearances. The insulation must be in reasonable condition – damage such as rips, tears, or salt or dust deposits on the shiny face of foil insulation degrades the performance of foil insulation.

Foil Underfloor Insulation

It is common to find damage to underfloor foil insulation. Where existing insulation is damaged, degraded, missing or incomplete, new non-electrically conductive underfloor insulation must be installed with an R-value of at least R 1.3. All insulation retrofitted for compliance with the RTA must also comply with NZS 4246. As of the 1st of July 2016, installing or repairing electrically conductive insulation into rented homes is prohibited under these Regulations.

Bulk Underfloor Insulation

Warmafloor insulation is the blanket type installed by Safe-R Insulation Auckland. Floor blanket insulation does not have the gaps and installation difficulties associated with some polystyrene insulation. Nor does it have a vented cavity often seen with foil (which can virtually negate any insulation R-value). Warmafloor is easy to install and produces great installed R-values. Uninsulated floors have a thermal resistance of R0.6, which can be improved to R1.5 or R1.8 with a Warmafloor insulation blanket system correctly fixed against the floor, between the floor joists (in most buildings with a continuous sub-floor perimeter wall). It also reduces draughts through gaps between uncovered timber polished floors. Warmafloor insulation blanket is unaffected by humidity or water. Even if it is wetted, its thermal insulation resistance will be completely restored, when dried. Warmafloor does not represent a health risk to installers or occupiers of insulated buildings and does not promote corrosion on metal building components.

Safe-R Insulation Wellington – Floor Insulation Advice

Safe-R Insulation Wellington – Advice on Floor Insulation

Safe-R Insulation Wellington installs Warmafloor insulation. Warmafloor underfloor insulation doesn’t absorb moisture (less than 2% over 96 hours). This is important if your location is anywhere near the coast (most of N.Z.). Any moisture absorption can result in performance reduction, product deterioration and other associated health risks. Warmafloor insulation is installed hard against the floor to stop rodents living in a cavity, which is often created by other types of floor insulation eg Foil.

Areas of damaged foil underfloor insulation will need to be replaced with non-electrically conductive insulation with a product R-value of at least R 1.3. The installation or repair of foil insulation is prohibited under the Regulations due to the risk of electrocution when installing and repairing foil insulation products.

If there is foil underfloor insulation, do not touch the foil without turning off the power at the mains first as there is an electrocution risk. Even then proceed with caution. Refer to NZECP 55 for important safety information before proceeding with the insulation inspection or any other work in the subfloor space.

The underfloor insulation should cover all accessible parts of the floor below the habitable spaces of the dwelling, except where clearances are required – e.g. for pipework – refer to the New Zealand insulation installation standard NZS 4246 for guidance on required clearances. The insulation must be in reasonable condition – damage such as rips, tears, or salt or dust deposits on the shiny face of foil insulation degrades the performance of foil insulation.

Warmafloor is a first grade insulation supplied by one of New Zealand’s largest insulation manufacturers and is not foil. It is a premium quality bulk insulation tested to NZS4859 standards by BRANZ
